The Chemistry Department honors the passing of Bill Carrico, friend of the department

As reported in the Denton Record Chronicle, the passing of Bill Carrico is announced. Bill is the son of James Leon (Kit) Carrico, who was Chair of our Department half a century ago. If one views the history cabinet in the front entrance of the Chemistry Building, one sees that Kit Carrico also had a son Jim Carrico, a physician who attended John Kennedy in Dallas when he was struck by an assassin's bullet. Jim has since deceased. With the passing of Bill, this generation of the Carricos is now a memory - but a strong and vivid one among those who knew them.

Bill Carrico was involved in athletics and was inducted into the UNT Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993. He worked as teacher, coach and assistant principal, in the Denton ISD. The athletic complex at Braswell, the fourth high school in Denton, will be named in honor of Bill Carrico.

All the Carricos - Kit, Jim, and Bill, were important mentors to those they served. I cannot emphasize how important the Carricos have been to the foundation of our Department when it was emerging as a Ph.D. institution in the 1960s. Jenny and I interviewed Bill Carrico, 10 years ago, at the time we were collecting history from that generation of the department. He and his wife Deanna (still survives) were lovely people, who were loved all who knew them. We know some of their children, as well, particularly Happy Carrico, who is involved in the Denton ISD as principal (Newton Rayzor Elementary).

Services will be at 4:30 Friday, February 19th at the Denton Bible Church.
