Graduate Application Instructions

 Application Deadlines

  • Our program is designed for students to begin in Fall, while Spring admission is granted on a case-by-case basis. We do not accept students starting in the Summer.
  • Applications for Departmental Pre-Screening Evaluation for Fall are due December 1st, for review. If you submit after this date, your application will be reviewed only if we have additional space in the program. No pre-screening evaluations or applications will be accepted after February 1st.
  • Applications for Departmental Pre-Screening Evaluation for Spring are due September 1st, for review. If you submit after this date, your application will be reviewed only if we have additional space in the program. No pre-screening evaluations or applications will be accepted after November 1st.

NOTE: We do not anticipate making any Spring 2025 admissions. We are currently accepting pre-screening evaluation applications for Fall 2025.

GRE Requirements:

  • We no longer require the GRE, but you are welcome to upload your scores if you have them.

GPA Requirements:

  • 3.00 GPA for all previous degrees (i.e., undergraduate and masters, if applicable)

Required Degree:

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or a related field, with relevant course work in several of the following subfields of Chemistry: Analytical, Inorganic, Physical, Organic, Chemical Biology, and Computational Chemistry.

Prerequisites:

  • If you do not have a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or a related field, we will consider your application if you have completed several advanced chemistry courses in relevant subfields, such as Analytical, Inorganic, Physical, Organic, Chemical Biology, and Computational Chemistry.

Experience:

  • Although previous research experience is not required, any relevant research and lab experience will be considered favorably in evaluating your application.

 How to Apply:


If you would like to be considered for admission to the UNT Chemistry Department Graduate Program, we require all applicants to complete a FREE Departmental Pre-Screening Evaluation prior to completing the UNT Graduate Application through GradCAS on the Toulouse Graduate School website. After the pre-screening evaluation has been completed, the Chemistry Department will direct you to complete the GradCAS application.

Chemistry Department Pre-Screening Evaluation Instructions:

After gathering all materials listed below, applicants should proceed to complete the Chemistry Department’s Pre-Screening Evaluation*.

**Incomplete submissions will NOT be reviewed.

Required Materials for Pre-Screening Evaluation:

  • Transcripts:
  • Include all transcripts from all universities you have attended, including any in-progress degrees.
    • Unofficial transcripts may be uploaded for Pre-Screening review. If you have multiple transcripts, please merge the files or scan all pages into one PDF file in order to upload the transcripts as one document.
    • Domestic students (those with a degree from a U.S. institution) must submit official transcripts to the Toulouse Graduate School if accepted through Departmental pre-screening.
    • International students must submit copies of all transcripts *and* all diplomasalong with an official English translation.
  • Statement of Purpose (SOP):
  • Discuss why you want to come to UNT and what makes our program a good fit for your graduate studies.
  • Include any relevant research experience that is not obvious from looking at your CV.
  • Optionally, please include a statement of which faculty member(s) you are interested in doing research with and why. This is not required, but it may assist in our evaluation. *PLEASE DO NOT REACH OUT TO ANY UNT CHEMISTRY FACULTY MEMBERS PRIOR TO COMPLETING THE PRE-SCREENING EVALUATION. THEY CANNOT OFFER YOU ENTRANCE INTO THE PROGRAM OR ADVOCATE FOR YOUR ADMISSION
  • If there are any discrepancies in your transcripts or anything else you feel is important for the department to know for your Pre-Screening Evaluation, please include this in your SOP.
  • Please ensure your SOP is NO LONGER than 2 pages.
    What is a Statement of Purpose?
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)/Resume:
    • Be sure to include all degrees received and those in progress.
  • GRE scores.
    • The Chemistry Department no longer requires the GRE for admissions. If you would like to submit test scores, you are welcome to do so.
  • Letters of Recommendation
    • Three recommendation letters are required, with at least two from faculty in Chemistry or closely related fields. Please instruct your recommenders to upload their letters on university or company letterhead in PDF format to CHEMrecommendation@unt.edu
  • International Student Requirement:
    • Proof of English language proficiency. Your level of proficiency as determined by standardized tests and other assessments determines your eligibly for admission and for departmental assistantships. This is a University requirement, with no exemptions. You may upload unofficial test scores of your English Language Proficiency for the Departmental Pre-Screening Evaluation. Please do not send official scores to the University for the purposes of completing the Departmental Pre-Screening Evaluation, the department will not receive them and your application will be incomplete. How do I show proof?
