Professor Martin Schwartz was an internationally recognized physical chemist and accomplished
scholar, having published over 125 peer-reviewed research articles. Dr. Schwartz also
directed or served on the advisory committees of over 150 M.S. and Ph.D. students,
in addition to serving as a mentor for countless undergraduate and TAMS students throughout
his 44-year tenure at UNT. Research and teaching were his passions.
Upon his unexpected passing, his family began the process to fulfill his wish of establishing
a scholarship in honor of his mother, Betty Schwartz. Her guidance and encouragement
to Dr. Schwartz and his siblings produced a deep love of learning, a standard of excellence
in every undertaking, and a passion for helping others develop similar characteristics.
We are pleased to announce the establishment of The Professor Martin Schwartz Scholarship
in Honor of His Beloved Mother, Betty Schwartz. There will be two scholarships awarded,
one for graduate students and one for undergraduate/TAMS students, beginning in 2024.
In the meantime, two special one-time awards were given this year in honor of Dr.
Schwartz's adored cats, Sapphire T. McGillicuddy and Spooky McSchwartz, Esquire. The
cats were a standard feature in Dr. Schwartz's lecture Powerpoints!
We would like to thank Susan Schwartz for her generosity and for working closely with
the Department to ensure that Dr. Schwartz's wish to support UNT students came to
pass.
The legacy Dr. Schwartz leaves behind is one of excellence in everything and encouragement
to be curious about the world around us. We are so grateful for the continued generosity
of the Schwartz family and look forward to celebrating his legacy each year through
these scholarships.
