Current Students

Ting Han
Ting Han was born in Xuan Cheng, Anhui, China, in 1996. He obtained his BS degree in Applied Chemistry in 2019 from Anhui Normal University China, where he conducted undergraduate research in chem-/bio-sensors. In the same year, he began his graduate studies at University of North Texas under the supervision of Dr. Hong Wang. His currently research involves the design and synthesis of beta-functionalized benzoporphyrins and advanced porous materials.
Jacob Arvidson
Jacob graduated from the University of Kansas in 2016 with a BS in chemistry. Jacob currently works with porphyrins, synthesizing acene-fused porphyrins as well as porphyrins suitable as ligands in metal coordination reactions. His hobbies include outdoor activities such as swimming, kayaking, and hiking.
Jose Cortes Vazquez
Bs. University of Alcala de Henares (2015)
Ms. University of Jaume I (2016)
Hobbies: Traveling, playing drums and outdoor exercise.
Saad Shaikh
Saad has earned his Master’s in Organic Chemistry in 2014 from Poona College (aff. University of Pune). Before joining Dr. Wang’s Lab in 2021, he has worked at Aurigene Discovery Technology Limited (subsidiary of Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories) as a Research Associate since 2015. Aurigene is a drug discovery company located in India. His research was focused on Separation Science. He worked primarily on small molecules and has experience on Method Development, Chiral Purification involving HPLC and LC-MS. At Dr. Wang’s Lab, Saad’s research is focused on Porphyrin Chemistry. In his free time, he enjoys playing Cricket and Soccer and loves to explore Hiking trails.

Spenser Washburn
Spenser attended BYU-IDAHO where he received a B.S. in Chemistry Education. He then taught High School Chemistry in Las Vegas for 3 years before attending UNT to earn a PhD in Chemistry. He currently is working on Cross-Conjugated Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons attached to the β position of porphyrins. He is an amateur furniture builder and enjoys exploring nature with his wife and 3 children. He hopes to work in textiles or the energy sector after completing his degree.

Courtney Cooper
Courtney Cooper is a graduate doctoral candidate that synthesizes and characterizes extended-porphyrins with thiophene moieties; she has presented at several conferences and won both a Best Poster Award and travel grants. In her free time, she frequently gardens and designs new crochet patterns. She is interested in a post-doc in chemistry education, a lecturer position, or an industry position synthesizing small molecules or polymers.
