Just to the west of the Institut de France, by only 30 meters, is the home where Humboldt resided during the early part of the 1800s. Humboldt was a key figure in the development of the "Rediscovery of the Elements" -- he delivered a sample of vanadinite from Mexico to Europe for analysis {LINK: Mexico854}, and gathered important information during his tours of the New World and Russia regarding mineralogy and geology. The fact that he was given affluent quarters so conveniently placed to the Académie des Sciences underscores the high opinion that the French scientists had of him.
