This map shows the route of the authors from Mexico City to Zimapán and Cardonal (left); to the right is traced the route of Humboldt (dotted lines). Humboldt landed at Acapulco in March 1803 and used Mexico City as his base of operations before he departed Veracruz for Cuba March 1804. He never visited Zimapán (he only traveled as far north as Actopan, between Pachuca and Ixmiquilpan), but in Mexico City he visited with del Río, his old class mate at the Freiberg School of Mines in Germany.
