Inside the building, this is the room that Cruickshank probably used in his research. Cruickshank of Woolwich worked with Dr. Adair Crawford, physician at St. Thomas Hospital in London {LINK: London2J-002} to prepare medicines which Crawford used to treat his patients. The two scientists had obtained what they understood was terra ponderosa (barium carbonate) from Strontian {LINK: Strontian036}, but careful characterization allowed them to come to the conclusion that they had discovered "a new earth." This new substance was more fully described by Hope in Edinburgh {LINK: Edinburgh055} and became known as "strontium."
