After Rutherford ascertained that the emanation from thorium due to a new gas (an isotope of radon) he gave a public demonstration of the reality of this gas by condensing it to a liquid. A machine for liquefying air was needed in order to attain the low temperatures rquired for this operation. W. C. Macdonald, a frequent benefactor for the physics research at McGill, came to the financial rescue. (See next photo).
