This is a posed photograph of Rutherford before his equipment in his basement laboratory in the Macdonald Physics Building. This was not Rutherford's normal workshop attire; he was dressed for a special report by a newspaper journalist writing about radioactivity in 1905. The photographer was so fastidious that he insisted Rutherford show shirt cuffs below his coat sleeves to create a more elegant appearance (detachable cuffs were borrowed from visiting German colleague Otto Hahn).
