"The mine.
Kalmeter bought mining claims and began to plan for the mining of cobalt. In 1737, workers arrived from Falun [LINK: Falun001] to begin work, but they were forced to give up at Christmas time because of shortage of materials, tools and food. Residents were not very happy to have a mine in their area and opposed the plans. Kalmeter returned years later and became more serious in the operation. He initially sold the raw ore but the state required that he set up a "blue color works" [cobalt blue] and Kalmeter set up Sophiendal [named after his wife Anna Sophia] about 8 km southeast of the mine."
