Priestley stayed in Hackney until continued fears for his safety prompted his emigration to America. He preached his last sermon at Gravel Pit Chapel on 30 March 1794, and then sailed for New York. During his eight-week transit (April 8-June 4, 1794) across the Atlantic which witnessed "icebergs and waterspouts, Lavoisier was guillotined in Paris. {LINK: ParisC325}. It is believed that if he had stayed in England, Priestley would have been arrested for treason owing to his French sympathies.
