Awards and Scholarships

The Department of Chemistry offers a variety of scholarship opportunities for our undergraduate students. Additional scholarships offered through the College of Science. Applications are usually due the beginning of February.

Most scholarships require recommendation letters. Your recommenders will receive instructions about how to submit recommendation letters.

DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY UNDERGRADUATE AWARDS

These awards consist of a monetary award, which is used to defray tuition and fees for the following academic year, and a certificate. All scholarship awardees are recognized at the Department's Honors Day Ceremony held at the end of April. To be eligible, you must submit your application through the COS scholarship application site.

J.L. CARRICO AWARD

To be eligible for consideration for the scholarship, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

  1. COS Application

This award is given for outstanding performance by a senior Chemistry major. It is the Department's oldest and most prestigious award. It was established in honor of Dr. James L. Carrico, who was a long-standing chairman of the Chemistry Department. The award was first awarded in 1969.

It is based on a student's academic record in the sciences and math along with any other considerations such as senior level research participation. All Chemistry graduating seniors are automatically considered for this award.


CHEMISTRY CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION STUDENT ENDOWMENT

To be eligible for consideration for the scholarship, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

  • COS Application
  • Faculty Recommendation Letter
  • Complete FAFSA

This scholarship was created and funded by our alumni and faculty in celebration of the 100-year anniversary of the Chemistry Department. The award is open to both undergraduate and graduate Chemistry students, and recognizes excellence in academic achievement and financial need. The scholarship alternates annually between graduate and undergraduate students.


ADDIE MAE LLOYD CURBO AWARD

To be eligible for consideration for the scholarship, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

  1. COS Application
  2. Student must have current freshman standing, be a declared chemistry major and have the highest score on a competitive freshman-level examination administered to invited outstanding freshman students.

This award is given to the outstanding freshman Chemistry major. The award is based on performance on an Outstanding Freshman Exam which is administered in April. Students are individually selected by their instructors to participate in the exam.


W.N. MASTERS AWARD

To be eligible for consideration for the scholarship, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

  1. COS Application
  2. Applicants must be a declared and listed major in Chemistry or Biochemistry;
  3. Applicants must be a junior or senior in standing, but not graduating in the semester of application;
  4. Two Faculty Recommendation Letters
  5. Provide transcripts of all college work

This scholarship is given to the outstanding junior or senior major in the natural sciences. The award was first given in 1980.


HERMAN AND CLOTA VAUGHAN AWARD

To be eligible for consideration for the scholarship, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

  1. COS Application
  2. Submission of official SAT and/or ACT scores

This award is given to the outstanding Chemistry majors of either sophomore standing or in sophomore level classes. It was endowed by Clota and Herman Vaughan who received their B.S. Degrees in Chemistry from UNT in 1950. It was first awarded in 1991.


VIRGINIA H. AND NORMAN E. WEST SCHOLARSHIP

To be eligible for consideration for the scholarship, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

  1. COS Application
  2. Complete FAFSA
  3. Recommendation Letter from their high school science teacher, or in the case of a transfer student, from a previous science teacher.

This scholarship is given to an outstanding incoming undergraduate Chemistry major.


Schwartz Undergrad Scholarship in Honor of Betty Schwartz

To be eligible for consideration for the scholarship, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

  1. COS Application
  2. Two Recommendation Letters

Professor Martin Schwartz was an internationally recognized physical chemist and accomplished scholar, having published over 125 peer-reviewed research articles. Dr. Schwartz also directed or served on the advisory committees of over 150 M.S. and Ph.D. students, in addition to serving as a mentor for countless undergraduate and TAMS students throughout his 44-year tenure at UNT. Research and teaching were his passion. The endowment is meant to benefit students who embody the qualities which Dr. Schwartz admired. Preference will be given to current students in the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science (TAMS) and stated interest in physical chemistry and/or in conducting undergraduate research in physical chemistry.


Sapphire T McGillicuddy & Spooky McSchwartz Esq. Undergrad Scholarship

To be eligible for consideration for the scholarship, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

  1. COS Application
  2. Two Recommendation Letters

Preference will be given to current students in the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science (TAMS) and stated interest in physical chemistry and/or in conducting undergraduate research in physical chemistry.

This scholarship was set up in memory of Professor Martin Schwartz.


The Re Calderon Scholarship

To be eligible for consideration for the scholarship, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

  1. COS Application

The Department of Chemistry is pleased to announce the Re Calderón Chemistry Scholarship, funded by a generous donation from Dr. Jose Calderón and his wife, Dr. Alicia Re Cruz, in memory of Salustia Arteaga. The Re Calderón Scholarship is a competitive award granted every other academic year, rotating with the Department of Anthropology.


Virgil & Catherine A. Rogers Chemistry Scholarship

To be eligible for consideration for the scholarship, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

  1. COS Application
  2. Maintain a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

This scholarship is the result of a very generous gift by Catherine Ann and Virgil E. Rogers to establish a scholarship for undergraduate majors in the Department of Chemistry.


Summer Minority Research Program

To be eligible for consideration for the scholarship, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

  1. COS Application
  2. Complete FAFSA

The recipients of the scholarship must be residents of the State.


COLLEGE OF SCIENCE GRADUATE AWARDS

JOANN PETERS CHEMISTRY SCHOLARSHIP

To be eligible for consideration for the scholarship, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

  • COS Application
  • Complete FAFSA
  • Show membership in The Association for Women in Science (AWIS) (or its successor) for twelve months prior to applying for this scholarship.

This scholarship was created and funded by a Chemistry alum, and the first award was given in Spring 2019. The award is open to undergraduate Chemistry majors.


DEPARTMENTAL SERVICE AWARD

ROBERT WADE BROWN AWARD
To be eligible for consideration for the scholarship, an applicant must meet the following requirements:

  • COS Application
  • Faculty Recommendation Letter

This award is given to the outstanding undergraduate or graduate student who has most helped the Chemistry Department through his or her service activities. This award was established by Robert Wade Brown and was first awarded in 1985.
