Henri Moissan

1852-1907

He was a professor of chemistry at the École de Pharmacie and at the Sorbonne in Paris, France, who discovered fluorine by electrolyzing fluoride salts. With his electric furnace he investigated the synthesis of diamonds and other materials (carborundum, silicon carbide, when found in nature is called “moissanite”).
