Lise Meitner

1878-1968

She was a professor of chemistry at the University of Berlin who was codiscoverer (with Hahn) of protactinium and of nuclear fission. She fled Nazi Germany and continued her collaboration with Hahn by correspondence. She is regarded to have been entitled to sharing the Nobel Prize with Hahn, since she was of equal status at the university and shared fully in the scientific contribution.
