Henri Sainte-Claire Deville

1818-1881

 

  He was a Professor of chemistry at the University of Besançon, in Paris, France, then at the École Normale Supérieure. He prepared sodium on a commercial scale, and used this sodium to prepare pure samples of silicon and aluminum.
