Joseph Black

1728-1799

He was a professor of chemistry at Glasgow, Scotland, who characterized "fixed air" (carbon dioxide) and differentiated between magnesia and lime. He showed carbon dioxide to be the agent that converts caustic alkalis into mild alkalis (i.e., changes NaOH and KOH into the carbonates).
