Kremnica is much smaller than Banská Štiavnica, but in some ways is just as important. Mining in the nearby Kremica Mountains (east of town) for gold and silver dates back to the 12th century. In 1335 Kremnica was given special privileges by the King of Hungary (Karl Robert) to mint its own gold coins. The mint was in production for 670 years, producing (among other coins) the famous Kremnica ducats.
