Advanced methods of purification of silver ores by mercury amalgamation were brought to Mexico by Don Fausto Elhuyar {LINK: Vergara198), who learned these methods at Freiberg, Germany and other localities in Europe. The Mexican method of silver amalgamation, used for centuries, utilized a combination of metallic mercury and salt (sodium chloride) to purify the silver.
