This is the modern view of the same Main Building ("Rektorat/Verwaltung" = "Office of the Chancellor and Administration") on Kaiserstrasse. Both east and west wings have been added since the 19th century. Meyer joined the university in 1868, replacing Weltzien who had been holding the chair of general chemistry. Weltzien had been the professor at Karlsruhe who organized the Chemical Congress in 1860. Meyer joined the university just at the time when his finished paper on the Periodic Table appeared.
