Another plaque on the building. One of the most famous figures associated with mining schools. "Abraham Gottlieb Werner 1749-1817. Professor of the Mining School. Founder of the new temporal mineralogy and geology." Werner was a celebrated teacher, influencing many students who spread throughout the world, including del Río (who discovered vanadium in Mexico) and Humboldt (famous explorer who traveled throughout the Americas, Europe, and Siberia.). Werner was Neptunist, meaning that he believed that all geology was a result of flooding, or stratification by water. By contrast, Humboldt was a Vulcanist, believing that present geology resulted from molten rocks. Both were correct -- both processes gave rise to the modern earth.
