At Vauquelin's feet, "Analyses of stones, water, and minerals. Analysis of organic compounds." Vauquelin was noted as perhaps the second best analytical chemist of his time (Klaproth of Berlin being first (LINK: berlin020), discovering the composition of many minerals; but his first love was pharmacy. He discovered the first amino acid -- asparagine (from asparagus).
