Foucault's pendulum inside the Panthéon. In order for Foucault's pendulum to work efficiently, a long pendulum is needed with a heavy weight. Over a period of time, the plane of the pendulum's swing rotates, showing the earth's rotation, i.e., movement underneath the trajectory of the pendulum. The rotation of this plane varies according to the latitude, varying from 360 degrees per day at 0 latitude, and not at all at 90 latitude (specifically, as the sine of the latitude).
