Although he did not realize it at the time, he was the first to observe helium -- spectroscopically during the total eclipse of the sun in India in 18 August 1863. He noticed a yellow spectral line previously unidentified in the atmosphere of the earth, but did not understand it was a new element. Further research by Lockyer in Great Britain {LINK: London5-035} made the connection.
