The new church was consecrated in 1747, expanded in 1844 and 1878. In the graveyard rests the remains of John Harrison (1693-1776), the famous clockmaker who solved the problem of determining longitude during the journeys of ships by inventing the marine chronometer, facilitating James Cooks' navigation.
Today at this church the Hampstead Scientific Society sometimes holds its meetings. With an active observatory in Hampstead, this society emphasizes the astronomical legacy of Hampstead, which reaches back to Lockyer who had his private observatory at his home in West Hampstead 1.3 km south. At this observatory Lockyer observed a new spectral line in the atmosphere of the sun.
