The inset shows the "crown and anchor" logo of the tavern. The origin of the name may come from a dice game of sailors dating back to the early 1700s.
The Crown and Anchor was also the birthplace of Birkbeck College (1823), now situated 1.5 km to the northwest on Malet St. (The kind assistance of the library of Birkbeck College {LINK to london2D-360}, made this engraving available to the authors).
The church (left) is St. Clements, which appears the same today (known by the nursery rhyme, "Oranges and lemons/Say the bells of St. Clements.")
