Closeup of the Memorial, which was erected here in 1924. Joachimsthal was founded in 1516, on the site of the former village Konradsgrün, which had existed here approximately 1300-1450. By 1534 Joachimsthal had become the second largest city in Bohemia (Prague was the largest). Agricola {LINK: to Glauchau museum} was city physician in Joachimsthal during the prosperous years (1527-1530); here he wrote Bermannus, a catechism on mining techniques and lore. There is no monument dedicated to Agricola in Joachimsthal, even though he figured significantly in the development of its technology.
