Case C. Excited Radioactivity refers to the phenomenon Rutherford observed that a substance exposed to thorium for a period of time became radioactive itself. Rutherford showed this was due to an invisible layer of radioactive material, which later was realized to be decay products of radon produced by the thorium. These were some of the original experiments which prompted Rutherford to explore the general phenomenon of radioactivity.
