Baron Auer von Welsbach

1858-1929

He was an Austrian chemist who separated didymia into praseodymium and neodymium. Welsbach invented the gas mantle known by his name, by impregnating mantle fabric with refractory thorium and cerium salts. He is credited with the independent discovery of lutetium, which he called “cassiopeium.”
