Johann Wolfgang Döbereiner

1780-1849

He was the professor of chemistry at Jena, Germany, who recognized triads of elements. In each triad the middle element had an atomic weight midway between the other two, and all three appeared to have similar properties. This was an important step toward the discovery of the periodic table. Döbereiner’s most famous finding was the catalytic action of platinum (ignition of hydrogen over spongy platinum).
