Charlemagne

  He was the greatest of Medieval kings. King of the Franks and founder of the first empire in western Europe after the fall of Rome. His court at Aix-la-Chapelle, France, became the center of a cultural rebirth in Europe, known as the Carolingian Renaissance. Charlemagne created schools in cathedrals and monasteries which developed into Universities.
