Berthollet, a French chemist, researched dyes and bleaches and introduced the use of chlorine as a bleach, “l’eau de Javel”, and determined the composition of ammonia. He collaborated with Lavoisier to devise a chemical nomenclature, or system of names, which serves as the basis of the modern system of naming chemical compounds. Potassium Chlorate (KClO₃), a strong oxidizer, is known as "Berthollet’s Salt". Non-stoichiometric compounds are also named berthollides in his honor. Berthollet accompanied Napoleon to Egypt along with several other scientists (1798-1801).
