James Clerk Maxwell (1831-1879) was famous for his important work in physics, particularly his formulation of the electromagnetic theory, demonstrating that electric and magnetic fields propagate at the speed of light, and in fact light is composed of orthogonal electric and magnetic components. Ironically, Maxwell was dismissed from Abeerdeen in 1860 when Marischal College joined King's College and one of the Professorships of Natural Philosophy [Science] was dissolved. He moved to London where he performed his electromagnetic work.
