Walking north toward the university (650 meters to the northwest from Kuhschacht; see map 2), one frequently sees the old mining salutation, "Glück auf!" -- "Greetings! Fortune be with you!" Originally, centuries ago, this expression was "Glück zu" -- "Luck to [you]" -- but evolved a whimsical grammatical twist to the present form ("auf" and "zu" also mean "on" and "off," respectively).
