Of special interest to mineralogists is the trip taken by Humboldt, Ehrenberg, and Gustav Rose to Siberia in 1829. Gustav Rose belonged to a continuing family of scientists beginning with his grandfather Valentin Rose the Elder whose pharmacy Klaproth joined in 1771 (see Heilige Geist Kirche below). This 15500-km trip was done in horse cart. Jekaterinburg (Ekaterinburg; the Russians pronounce it "Yekaterinburg") is the city noted above, near which the Beresov mining district furnished the crocoite yielding the discovery of chromium. Tobolsk is the birthplace of Mendeleev.
