"Founded in 1794 by the Convention [Revolution committee], it [the old École Polytechnique] was placed in the Hotel Lassay (see above), today the residence of the president of the General Assembly. The students were external. Napoleon in 1805 placed the school at the location of the historic colleges of Navarre (founded in 1315), Boncourt, and Tournai. The chapel, the main auditorium, the pavilion of theology, which dated from the Middle Ages, were taken down during the period 1836-1875. In 1936 the final arrangement was made to remove buildings of the 18th century; a facade remains from 1738."
