The association of Wollaston and Tennant was close and led to many joint efforts in the investigation of the platinum metals. They also had a close personal friendship as well; together they visited Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland (1805-1806). This spectacular formation was created by volcanic basaltic flow 50 million years ago. It is located (N55 14.48 W06 30.72) in County Antrim, 4.4 km north of Bushmills, home of one of the authors' ancestors (JLM).
