Further upstream, on a quebrada (fork) of Rio Condoto. The gravels in the foreground show the promising placers that the original explorers worked to obtain gold. In these gravels one could pick out individual grains of gold, either by hand or by panning techniques. In Rio de San Juan tributaries white grains were also found, which were the "platina." These rendered the gold brittle when alloyed and were deemed worthless, and were dumped as waste into the river by order of the Crown. Courtesy, Christian Castro.
