de Ulloa is generally credited with the discovery of platinum, originally found in New Granada (northern South America) because he published the first account of this metal in Europe in 1748. de Ulloa had a varied career, later being the first Spanish governor of Louisiana 1766-1768; he later established the Institute of Mineralogy in Madrid in 1787.
